“Getting ready to sell” sounds as if you want to sit down with a buyer tomorrow. That is not necessary at all. The things a potential buyer looks at are often exactly the things you want to have in order yourself as an owner.
What a buyer looks at
- How predictable is your revenue?
- How dependent is the organisation on you as the owner?
- Are processes documented?
- Are contracts and prices set up logically?
- Can you show how your organisation is governed and secured?
If there are still loose ends there, that is not only a nuisance when selling. It already makes your MSP harder to scale and less manageable today.
Consolidation also affects those who stay independent
Even if you don’t want to sell, the market around you is changing. Competitors become part of larger groups, clients get new points of contact and employees start rethinking where they want to work. That creates pressure, but also opportunities: talent becoming available, clients looking for an alternative, room to grow in a targeted way.
So the better question is not “should I sell my MSP?”, but “what does this movement mean for my strategy?”. Doing nothing while the market changes is also a choice.
Start in good time
At MSP Mentor & Friends, Peter Vorstenbos put it aptly: the MSPs that are most attractive to a buyer often start preparing years in advance. Not because they want to sell tomorrow, but because a well-organised company always creates more value.
MSP Mentor works with MSPs that are growing, acquiring, selling or want to carry on independently. We know which parts make the difference when you want to take the next step.
